First drafts – A few pages in the large wilderness of the world of writing

99-word story: The book

He closed the door and stood with his back against it. His head thumped as the voices on the other side became muffled, as had so much recently. He crossed to the table and sat down.

The book lay flat on the table, its thick binding rising off the surface like a construction. His trembling hands paused before they stroked the cover. He took a deep breath before his fingers gripped the cover and turned.

His fingers hovered over the photograph on the first page. His head dropped as he sat, staring, and the silence pressed closer around him.

Another attempt at minimal, using Hemingway’s iceberg-theory.

  1. Love this, Chris! However, I would like to know more!

    • Thanks Sharon.
So, are you then saying that it worked? The iceberg-theory, I mean?

      • Hi Chris! I’m definitely saying the ‘Iceberg Theory’ worked! I read the link you posted as this is the first time I have heard of this Hemingway technique! All so interesting! Thanks Chris.

      • Really? I must admit, I only discovered it a few years ago when I read a Hemingway biography. It certainly beats “She shouted angrily”. 🙂
I actually find it a good exercise to go with my 99-worders but it can get difficult. I might have to start 199-worders or something.

      • All I can say Chris is your 99 word stories kick my weekend off nicely!! Yes, the Hemingway technique is certainly worth exploring!! If you add another 100 words, the extra words would add more layers! I can hardly wait! 😄🤗
