Great piece of writing. The last train, bus, tram, whatever is always apart, on the edge, as if every passenger, and even the driver knows that after this, there’s nothing. They are the dregs of the day. Maybe tomorrow will be different.
Exactly Jane. That last ride smacks of desperation. Desperation to return home and desperation at the prospect of repeating the same thing the next day.
And there’s the gulf in between that I always find scary.
